What I'm Listening To - 10.10.07

"Handle Me" by Robyn.

She is one crazy lady. if you dare to, you will remember her from her pop smashes 'Do You Know (What It Takes)' and 'Show Me Love.' Now that she's no longer a US pop label machine, running her own music label just for her music, sure she's still producing pop, but it's much more refined and ...just orgasmic. check out her entire album, Robyn, which debuts in the US on December 4th, though it's been out for two years in Sweden.

"Get Back" by Britney Spears

from her as-yet-unreleased album, Blackout. ok. everyone has his or her own opinion about britbrit. sure, she's a crazy-fucked addict that needs help. i've been there. i've been down the road of insanity called addiction and alcoholism. but, seriously, she has to reach rock-fucking bottom (again?) before she wants to get help. so...let her do it. fuck her.

anyway, about the song. this is one of a handful of tracks from the Demo leak that I really love. I WILL be buying her CD. Yup. This, Kala and Good Girl Gone Bad will sum up my 2007 Purchases. just download the track. love it, loathe it. whatever. do it.

1. "Someone Great" by LCD Soundsystem

My second favorite song from my second favorite album of 2007 thus far. I'll let the video speak for itself

What I'm Listening To - 9.16.07

1. "Drop It Like It's Hot (Timbaland Remix)" by Snoop Dogg.

just continue on my little string of anti-Pharrell propaganda, here's a better mix of Drop It Like It's Hot, found on one of the beloved-by-me blogs, attorney st. I mean, I do enjoy the original. I just kinda love the drum groove to this one with the piercing synths. c'mon. gotta love it.

not much else to say. did i mention Pharrell is tired? or that timbo is better?

or maybe that Shock Value sucks?

or maybe that ...i dunno.

2. "The Pulse" by Digitalism.

why not. just a random, very nice electronic bit from the...well, one of the best electronic acts of 2007. I just love arpeggiators, and decayed dog-barking synths. woof.

digitalism sure knows how to stir up a frenzy better than most of their contemporaries. the swell and magnitude thereof are just striking. i found myself wading through this track the first time I heard it, as it was SO much to process.

that should give you enough reason to listen, right? also, check out their album, idealism

1. "Candy Shop" by Madonna

Full, HQ rip, from her as-yet unreleased next album. Much better than The Beat Goes On. Take a listen :D

edit: I much preferred the Dub of this song, sadly. The production track is thin, sounds like Pharrell imitated Timbaland horribly, her voice is cloying, and the lyrics are in-between. maybe madonna found a genre she can't own?

2. A Modern Midnight Conversation by The Chemical Brothers.

Funky Town sample? check. Awesome running bassline? check. Usual AMAZING Chemical Brothers production? check. European woman singing 'Listen to your heart/don't run away'? Check. this song is too catchy. from the first time i heard it, it's been in my head at least once a day. a decent album, too.

1. "G-Slide (Tour Bus)" by Lil Mama

i was totally turned off to this single when i heard it a few months ago, right from the second she sampled 'Wheels on the Bus.' i didn't want to deal with another 'Chain Hang Low'-type track. well, now that i found a high quality copy of the single and pumped it through my big system, i almost came on the spot. rattling bass, grimy synths, whistling accompaniment, T-Pain jabs, and hot rap. lil mama continues with her streak of hot-as-hell supersonic flows. brilliant. i just hope that this will be replacing 'Crank Dat' as the dance to be doin'. take a listen.

2. "As A Blonde" by FeFe Dobson

from her as-yet unreleased album, Sunday Love, 'As A Blonde' is perfect. Sounds like the shit my friends listened to during high school, with its driving guitar and drums--BUT the lyrics are biting and RAWK, while maintaining introspective and observational qualities. She explores the benefits of being a blonde, sarcastically.

"I was lookin in the mirror/ tryin' to find a new reflection/ wanna take the road less traveled down/ a different direction/make some new mistakes/ forget the ones i've made/ cry some tears of joy/ dress more like a boy/I'd come back as a blonde/ try a different lipstick on/ as a blonde"

if you like punk-ternative, try it out.

"Make It Hot" by Lil Mama.

The best 17 year old female on the market, Lil Mama, who produced the viral single, Lipgloss, has since released three more songs. "GSlide/Tour Bus" is her second single. Then "On Fire, " and then "Make It Hot." I love love love this song. Her ghetto voice flows over synth horns, she sings the chorus boistrously, over added clinking percussion "I-I came to put it down/Straight from New York to the A Town/ Haters wanna see me down/I ain't even put put put it down."

"It's Lil Mama, voice of the Young People" she boasts, mentioning the title of her album, and she couldn't be more correct. If she's the voice for the young people my age, i'll take it. She's better than any female MC since Missy. She puts it down HARD on this track, and I couldn't be happier.

Take a listen. Love it. It's a medium-quality rip.

1. "Gimme More" by Britney Spears

"it's Britney, bitch!" the track calls out at the beginning, and y'know...it's good to hear her again in the studio, purring away as the pop sex kitten she was.

and, finally, something comes of britney that isn't total shit. i'm glad for it. it's a pretty nice single, but i don't know if it's going to revive her career, but out of the three singles that have leaked so far, this one's the best. is that saying much? i don't know. you decide. supplementary single, "Cold As Fire"

2. "Good Life (Explicit)

my favorite track off of Graduation so far. i think graduation will definitely be the album to put 50 cent outta the solo world. (you know, he said if Kanye's Graduation sold more than his Curtis, he was going to quit his solo career) well, I look forward to no more magilla the gorilla records.

now, about the single. he samples "P.Y.T." from Thriller by Michael Jackson, which is one of my favorite singles of all time and it is a complete earbug. love it. love this single. Also, Kanye finally gets T-Pain to guest on a track where T-Pain doesn't sound like a robot Cher wannabe. Congrats on releasing your inner talent, T-Pain. Not bad. Commendable, even.

What I'm Listening To - 8.29.07

today from my vault, i bring you the tale of unwarranted, unaccepted love by The Little Folksinger, Ani DiFranco. one of my biggest inspirations, if you've never heard Ani before, this is the time. She's releasing a greatest hits err...artist's 18 album-encircling string of songs entitled Canon, and it deserves a listen. So i offer you Shameless, from her 1996 album, dilate, which is one of her best albums.

shameless

i cannot name this
i cannot explain this
and i really don't want to
just call me shameless
i can't even slow this down
let alone stop this
and i keep looking around
but i cannot top this

if i had any sense
i guess i'd fear this
i guess i'd keep it down
so no one would hear this
i guess i'd shut my mouth
and rethink a minute
but i can't shut it now
'cuz there's something in it

we're in a room without a door
and i am sure without a doubt
they're gonna wanna know
how we got in here
and they're gonna wanna know
how we plan to get out
we better have a good explanation
for all the fun that we had
'cuz they are coming for us, babe
and they are going to be mad
yeah they're going to be mad at us

this is my skeleton
this is the skin it's in
that is, according to light
and gravity
i'll take off my disguise
the mask you met me in
'cuz i got something
for you to see
just gimme your skeleton
give me the skin it's in
yeah baby, this is you
according to me
i never avert my eyes
i never compromise
so never mind
the poetry

i gotta cover my butt 'cuz i covet
another man's wife
i gotta divide my emotions
into wrong and right
then i get to see how close i can get to it
without giving in
then i get to rub up against it
'til i break the skin
rub up against it
'til i break the skin

they're gonna be mad at us
they're gonna be mad at me and you
they're gonna be mad at us
and all the things
we wanna do

just please don't name this
please don't explain this
just blame it all on me
say i was shameless
say i couldn't slow it down
let alone stop it
and say you just hung around
'cuz you couldn't top it

What I'm Listening To - 8.28.07

well, now that this blog is taking shape in my mind, i'm starting out with my first 'what i'm listening to.' click on titles to check out the songs.

1. "Model (Sinden Remix)" by To My Boy.

I found this awesome little remix, which quips "this weekend I constructed a model for the answer. it wasn't very easy, but these things never are i suppose!" what is to my boy answering? the question of life's purpose? hm. left me wondering. awesome house/techno beat with great production backing and remix by Sinden, a great British DJ that's worth checking out.

2."No One" by Alicia Keys

New midtempo love song from her forthcoming album, As I Am. Adequate lyrics, great instrumentation as always, but you can tell her voice has aged in the years since her last album. Slurred runs, overexertion, pitchiness. But still, a good track to brighten a day. It's all about that feeling one gets in an ideal relationship. Sure, it's trite, but it's cute. "No one/can get in the way of what i feel for you." Makes me feel lacking in the relationship area. sigh.

from my seemingly endless vault of music comes one of the first techno pieces i ever listened to and became addicted to when i discovered columbia house and signed up as a rebel 10 year old member. included in my first shipment was urbal beats, which i had chosen due to my love for the band the prodigy and their album, the fat of the land. but that's another story. track sixteen just happened to be
